🤔 Why this matters

Strong cross-functional relationships aren't just useful — they're foundational to your success, your collaborator’s success, and your company’s success. By dedicating time to mutual understanding, you'll gain incremental knowledge, anticipate needs, and work together more seamlessly with less guesswork.

When you spend time asking what helps or hinders someone else’s day to day, you make space for smoother collaboration, greater efficiency, and more chances for ideas that are good for everyone to emerge (and ripple across teams).

🛠 How to do it

Reach out to someone in a different function than you. Schedule 20–30 minutes to connect. You might choose someone you work with regularly or someone your team often intersects with, even if you haven’t worked closely yet.

If you are in person, a coffee or walk works great. If you're remote, a video call can work as well.

You don't need a big agenda — just come with genuine curiosity. One easy opener:

"I'd love to better understand your work so I can be a more thoughtful collaborator."

Understanding what makes someone’s job easier (or harder) can unlock smoother workflows, better timing, and even small process improvements. At the very least, you’ll leave the conversation with stronger alignment — and a stronger relationship.

✅ What to do now

1. Reach out to someone in another function and ask for their time 2. Have the conversation

✅ What to do after

3. Internalize what you've learned and do your best to amend your behavior to improve your collaboration 4. Thank them for their time + tell them what you hope to improve You don’t need to act on every piece of feedback right away.
